He was working on behalf of <a title=\"Woodland Trust\" href=\"www.woodlandtrust.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\">The Woodland Trust<\/a>, a charity I&#8217;d never heard of.\u00c2\u00a0Over the past few weeks on the road I&#8217;ve been amazed at how many awful new-build housing estates seem to be encroaching on green belt (or at least wooded) land. So\u00c2\u00a0I was happy to listen to his two-minute pitch. And I must admit, I was won over.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">First a few facts-<\/span><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The UK is one of Europe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s least wooded countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Ancient woodland is home to more threatened species than any other      habitat in the UK.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Half of ancient broadleaved woodland that had survived until the      1930s has now been lost.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">85% of ancient woodland has no legal designation to protect it from      outside threats.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">And a small plug for the work they do-<\/span><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The      Woodland Trust, founded in 1972, is the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leading charity dedicated      solely to the protection of our native woodland heritage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">By acquiring woodland sites The Woodland Trust bring them into our care and protection. Many of our woods were previously under threat from development pressure or unsympathetic management.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Woodland Trust woods are sympathetically managed for wildlife and public enjoyment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">We also replace those woods that have been lost to landscape and create more new native woodland than practically anyone else in the UK.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">We have created 3,200 hectares of new native woodland.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Our Millennium Commission backed Woods on your Doorstep<em> <\/em><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">project has created 200 new community woods in England and Wales and 50 more in Northern Ireland.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Find out more about The Woodland Trust on their <a title=\"Woodland Trust\" href=\"The Woodland Trust\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and why not commit a few pounds a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was collared by a bright and breezy charity volunteer in the foyer of a shopping centre recently.
