The Times article quotes that almost three-fifths of northerners in the survey described southerners as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153snobs\u00e2\u20ac\u009d while half surveyed associated London and the home counties with \u00e2\u20ac\u0153wide boys\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and City brokers in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153pinstripe suits\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. For southerners, the north is a desolate landscape of derelict mining villages and fish and chip shops, and is dismissed by three-fifths as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153bleak\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153unsophisticated\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The existence of the North-South divide is often contested, although the <a title=\"Watford Gap service station\" href=\"http:\/\/motorwayservicesonline.co.uk\/services\/watford\/\" target=\"_blank\">Watford Gap service station<\/a> is unofficially known by residents of London and southeast England as the point where the north-south divide occurs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">According to wikipedia, it has recently become more popular to use the phrase &#8220;north of <a title=\"Watford City Council\" href=\"http:\/\/www.watford.gov.uk\/ccm\/portal\/\" target=\"_blank\">Watford<\/a>&#8220;, referring to the larger town. The reason for this change is probably due to the signs at Staples Corner, where the M1 begins, reading simply \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcM1, Watford, The North\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 thus potentially implying that Watford is the last place in the South.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In his book\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"The English by Jeremy Paxman\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/English-Portrait-People-Jeremy-Paxman\/dp\/0140267239\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1215898877&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">The English<\/a>, Jeremy Paxman proposed that the north might be defined as anywhere above a line drawn from the Severn to the Trent.\u00c2\u00a0Whereas Stewart Maconie, in his book <a title=\"Pies &amp; Prejudice by Stewart Maconie\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Pies-Prejudice-Search-Stuart-Maconie\/dp\/0091910226\" target=\"_blank\">Pies and Prejudice<\/a>, suggests the north begins at Crewe station, beyond which point \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the geology becomes harder, the accents flatter and the climate wilder.
