It&#8217;s also getting some fantastic reviews (for instance, <a title=\"Jerusalem reviewed in The Guardian\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/stage\/2009\/jul\/19\/jerusalem-royal-court-review\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a title=\"Jerusalem reviewed in What's On Stage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whatsonstage.com\/reviews\/theatre\/london\/E8831247733345\/Jerusalem.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It is a three-hour comic play that appears to deal with small beer and wastrels, but stealthily becomes a state-of-the-nation play. As Johnny \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Rooster\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Byron, its hero, supposedly says at birth: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Mother, what is this dark place?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \/ \u00e2\u20ac\u0153\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Tis England, my boy, England.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s showing at the <a title=\"Apollo Theatre website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.officialtheatre.com\/apollo-theatre\/\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo Theatre<\/a>, Shaftesbury Avenue from 28 January 2010 &#8211; 4th April.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the blurb &#8211; &#8220;A comic, contemporary vision of rural life in our green and pleasant land, Jez Butterworth\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s epic new play is wildly original.  In part a lament about the erosion of country life, and in part a rebuff to the antiseptic modern world, it features a landmark central performance from Mark Rylance as hellraiser Johnny Byron, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dca performance so charismatic, so mercurial, so complete and compelling that it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t look like acting\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 (Evening Standard), and a superb ensemble cast including Mackenzie Crook who &#8216;excels\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 as Johnny\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s sidekick Ginger. On St George\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day, the morning of the local county fair, Johnny Byron is a wanted man.
