{"id":2455,"date":"2010-02-08T11:30:23","date_gmt":"2010-02-08T11:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2455"},"modified":"2010-02-08T11:30:23","modified_gmt":"2010-02-08T11:30:23","slug":"nmm-exhibition-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/2010\/02\/08\/nmm-exhibition-part-3\/","title":{"rendered":"NMM EXHIBITION, PART 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of one of my upcoming exhibition of We English photographs at the <a title=\"National Media Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalmediamuseum.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\">National Media Museum<\/a> (12th March &#8211; 8th September), and as discussed <a title=\"In the NMM Collection\" href=\"..\/?p=2294\" target=\"_blank\">previously<\/a> on the blog, we will be including photographs from the Museum&#8217;s own collection, introducing the English at leisure from a historical perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Since September last year I&#8217;ve been working closely with Ruth Kitchin, Collections Assistant, on the selection and curation of works for the exhibition. Also involved was <a title=\"Professor Stephen Daniels\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/geography\/contacts\/a-z\/index.phtml?name=daniels\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Daniels<\/a> (Professor of Cultural Geography at Nottingham Trent University and author of the essay &#8216;The English Outdoors&#8217; from We English) who was invited to the Museum to discuss the development of the selection. He has published widely on the history and theory of landscape imagery and design. His books include <a title=\"Iconography of Landscape on amazon.co.uk\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Iconography-Landscape-Representation-Environments-Historical\/dp\/0521389151\" target=\"_blank\">The Iconography of Landscape<\/a> (Cambridge University Press, 1988) co-edited with Denis Cosgrove, <a title=\"Picturing Britain, amazon.co.uk\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Paul-Sandby-Picturing-John-Bonehill\/dp\/1905711484\/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1265378515&amp;sr=1-5\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Sandy: Picturing Britain<\/a> (Royal Academy of Arts, London July 2009) and the influential book <a title=\"Fields of Vision, amazon.co.uk\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Fields-Vision-Landscape-National-Identity\/dp\/0745613543\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1265378759&amp;sr=1-3\" target=\"_blank\">Fields of Vision<\/a> (Polity Press, Jan 1994).<\/p>\n<p>Writing in the latter, Daniels describes landscape imagery &#8220;as not merely a reflection of, or distraction from, more pressing social, economic, or political issues; it is often a powerful mode of knowledge and social engagement.
