C&amp;WW has an ancient history, i<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">t is thought the Vikings brought the sport to England, however its glory days occurred in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/img_2079.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-304\" title=\"img_2079\" src=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/img_2079.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/img_2079.jpg 567w, https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/img_2079-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Wrestlers at the Grasmere Lakeland Sports &amp; Show, 1903<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the mid-nineteenth century, wrestling had acquired a very wide popularity, attracting both competitors and spectators from inside and outside Cumbrian boundaries. In 1851 at Flan How, Robert Atkinson of Sleagill, Westmorland, met William Jackson of Kinneyside, Cumberland, for the Championship of England. The contest, for a purse of \u00c2\u00a3300, attracted one of the largest crowds ever to witness the sport with an estimated 10,000 spectators. Atkinson won, by three fans to one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/img_1830.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-305\" title=\"img_1830\" src=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/img_1830.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/img_1830.jpg 567w, https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/img_1830-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Two junior wrestlers in traditional costume compete at this year&#8217;s <a title=\"Gosforth Show report in Whitehaven News\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehavennews.co.uk\/news\/gosforth_show_beats_the_rain\" target=\"_blank\">Gosforth Show<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">To begin a match, the wrestlers must &#8220;tekk hod&#8221; &#8211; linking their fingers together behind the back of their opponent. This can take quite a while!<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The contest is &#8216;best of three falls&#8217;. If the hand hold is broken, that also constitutes a fall.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">In the 18th and 19th centuries, men competed for substantial cash prizes and local status.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">In these centuries, match fixing was a problem &#8211; it was known as &#8216;barneying&#8217;.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Wrestling always takes place on grass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/henrywelsh.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-306\" title=\"henrywelsh\" src=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/henrywelsh.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"687\" srcset=\"https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/henrywelsh.jpg 425w, https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/henrywelsh-185x300.jpg 185w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--StartFragment--><span lang=\"EN-US\">18649 Private Henry Walsh<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">While researching the sport I discovered that one of my distant relatives, Henry Walsh, (my Mum&#8217;s cousins grandfather) was a champion Cumberland wrestler winning between\u00c2\u00a01910-12.\u00c2\u00a0Born in Cleator Moor, Walsh was brought up in the town of Frizington. His wrestling career came to an abrupt end with the\u00c2\u00a0onset of the First World War. He enlisted with the Cumberland 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00c2\u00a0Border Regiment and was one of many soldiers gassed in battle. Sent back to the UK to\u00c2\u00a0recuperate, he died soon after aged just 27.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/_0019701.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-307\" title=\"_0019701\" src=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/_0019701.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"603\" srcset=\"https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/_0019701.jpg 425w, https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/_0019701-211x300.jpg 211w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>George Steadman<\/p>\n<p>Of all the heroic figures celebrated in the annals of wrestling, none can equal <a title=\"Encyclopedia of Traditional British Rural Sports By Tony Collins\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=jKjYyGF8hSwC&amp;pg=PA286&amp;lpg=PA286&amp;dq=%22george+steadman%22+wrestler&amp;source=web&amp;ots=7JPj0sH7EG&amp;sig=vR2YQwvldmGahY2rr8w-qghnxf0&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;resnum=6&amp;ct=result\" target=\"_blank\">George Steadman<\/a> of Asby, near Appleby.
