{"id":472,"date":"2008-09-27T22:50:45","date_gmt":"2008-09-27T22:50:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/?p=472"},"modified":"2008-09-29T22:27:27","modified_gmt":"2008-09-29T22:27:27","slug":"roadside-memorials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/09\/27\/roadside-memorials\/","title":{"rendered":"ROADSIDE MEMORIALS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A reader of the blog emailed me today to suggest I looked at roadside memorials as part of the project-<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dear Sir,<\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">This may seem macabre but there is a whole book just waiting to be written whose subject would be the shrines which have sprung up on roadsides where a loved one has been killed in an accident.\u00c2\u00a0Some are attended more regularly than many a grave, with floral tributes\u00c2\u00a0frequently restored. Others have grown to iconic proportions with photos and the deceased&#8217;s number plate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">All have a tale to tell I&#8217;m sure.\u00c2\u00a0For starters, if it&#8217;s still there, look near the lay by on the A628 near Woodhead between Glossop and Barnsley (the Woodhead pass).\u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s just before the lay by which is more like an old quarry entrance and has a snack bar trailer in it.\u00c2\u00a0The shrine is in a very dangerous section.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Although not something I intend covering for We English, I think it&#8217;s worth a mention on the blog, especially following on from my post <a title=\"Death, Read All About It blog post\" href=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/?p=436\" target=\"_blank\">Death, Read All About It<\/a>, last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>During our travels we did come across a large number of roadside memorials marking the location of fatal road accidents.\u00c2\u00a0These shrines, marked with\u00c2\u00a0plaques, wooden crosses and flowers,\u00c2\u00a0are considered not only an appropriate but also an expected response to tragedy.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/sr-524.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-473\" title=\"sr-524\" src=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/sr-524.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/sr-524.jpg 425w, https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/sr-524-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/sr-524-298x300.jpg 298w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Roadside Memorial,\u00c2\u00a0Purley Way, Croydon<\/p>\n<p>The card reads &#8220;In Loving Memory, Von &#8211; Always Remember You and Always Love, from Cary, Maggie, Chris, Ruth, Lesley and family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to <a title=\"Brake, The Road Safety Charity\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brake.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Brake<\/a>, the road safety charity, while many local authorities are happy for small memorials to be placed at the roadside, some authorities object to permanent memorials, even small ones, and even go as far as restricting the length of time that flowers can be placed at the scene of a crash.\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/cdas\/people\/cdasassociate\/index.html#umc\">Dr Una MacConville<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0from the Centre for Death &amp; Society at University of Bath has undertaken\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Dr Una MacConville research interests\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/cdas\/research\/roadside.html\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0into these &#8216;spontaneous shrines&#8217;, as she refers to them. She claims that these restrictions are for &#8220;health and safety reasons&#8221; and authorities are claiming they are acting on foot of advice from the police who fear the tributes, many near dangerous roads, could distract motorists. These restrictions have been considered &#8220;crass and insensitive&#8221; by bereaved families and road safety campaigners, some of whom feel these memorials are being removed in order not to draw attention to the death toll on certain roads.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most interesting phenomenon related to roadside memorials has been the appearance of <a title=\"Ghost Bikes website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ghostbikes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ghost Bikes<\/a> around England, and abroad.\u00c2\u00a0Ghost Bikes are small and somber memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit on the street. A bicycle is painted all white and locked to a street sign near the crash site, accompanied by a small plaque.\u00c2\u00a0The first ghost bikes were created in St. Louis, Missouri in 2003, and they have since appeared in at least 62 cities throughout the world.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/ccf27092008_00000.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-474\" title=\"ccf27092008_00000\" src=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/ccf27092008_00000.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/ccf27092008_00000.jpg 567w, https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/ccf27092008_00000-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ghost bike, Brighton<\/p>\n<p>James Danson-Hatcher, 23, was fatally injured when he was hit by a car travelling at about 60mph near a Brighton beauty spot. The\u00c2\u00a0accident happened at the junction of Saddlescombe Road and Devil&#8217;s Dyke Road, on the outskirts of Brighton, at about 5.30pm on April 5. Mr Danson-Hatcher, was riding home after a visit to Devil&#8217;s Dyke when he was hit by a Fiat Bravo.
