MORTON"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I&#8217;ve just started reading H.V.Morton&#8217;s classic travel book\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"In search of englnad\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Search-England-H-V-Morton\/dp\/0413544907\" target=\"_blank\">In Search of England<\/a>, an enduring account of Morton&#8217;s ramblings through the English countryside in the early days of the motorcar which was first published in 1927.\u00c2\u00a0Like Morton, we&#8217;ve begun our journey heading West from London.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This past week has seen us travelling through Berkshire and Wiltshire. We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re currently in the historic Roman town of\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Cirencester\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cirencester.co.uk\/history.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Cirencester<\/a> having just photographed the <a title=\"Kite Festival\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whkf.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Swindon Kite Festival<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0in Lydiard Park (somewhat spoiled by a distinct lack of wind!) and Cheltenham vs Eton at <a title=\"Polo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cirencesterpolo.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cirencester Polo Club<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/ccf18042008_00009.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/ccf18042008_000091.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-83\" title=\"ccf18042008_000091\" src=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/ccf18042008_000091.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/ccf18042008_000091.jpg 269w, https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/ccf18042008_000091-189x300.jpg 189w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8220;It is afternoon. It has stopped raining, and the sun has come out; so has the entire country. Those lonely mansions set upon a hill, or lying snug in woods, which six days out of seven appear dead, prove to be inhabited by colonels, majors, Sir Alfred This and Lord That. It is a startling coming-to-life. The recently desolate roads are alive with limousines- luncheon baskets on top, the girls inside, and the major driving.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">This passage, where Morton visits a Point-to-Point hunt near Beaulieu, could easily be used to describe the scene I found today at Cirencester Polo Club.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The match was held in the grounds of Lord and Lady Bathurst\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s estate (which has been in the family since 1695 when it was purchased by Sir Benjamin Bathurst).\u00c2\u00a0I was given permission to attend and photograph the event by Major Nicholas Musgrave, Chairman of the polo club (and whose daughter, Arabella, was Prince William&#8217;s first girlfriend, whom he dated before university), on the proviso that I was \u00e2\u20ac\u0153legit and had no intention of doing a hatchet job\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The polo was taken very seriously and the skill of the young riders was obvious even to a novice.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was slightly embarrassing having to park our motorhome next to an Aston Martin DB7\u00c2\u00a0and we certainly hadn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t brought our Fortnum and Mason hamper, which seemed to be de rigor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/_0018026.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-87\" title=\"_0018026\" src=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/_0018026.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/_0018026.jpg 567w, https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/_0018026-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Only a few hours earlier we had been in the grounds of <a title=\"Lydiard Park\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lydiardpark.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lydiard Park<\/a> in Swindon.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>People were gathered there in much the same way as they congregated at the polo match: arriving in their cars with friends, bringing food and drink, wearing their preferred summer clothes.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Sartorial codes differed however: in Swindon, the males were topless, tattooed and wearing shorts, in Cirencester, the favoured look was blue shirts and khaki slacks.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>One group played polo, the other played football; one group drank lager, the other praised the quality of the champagne.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This is England\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s class system at its most pointed, but it also demonstrates that whatever differences class and money might make, people still inhabit and utilise their immediate environments in much the same way.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Our rituals, pastimes and mode of discourse are, in some senses, quite uniform as we respond to the call of a sunny day and the freedom of green,\u00c2\u00a0open spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">By the way, I wonder which mode of transport Morton would have opted for if he was making his journey around England today- Talbot Swift motorhome or Aston Martin DB7?<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve just started reading H.V.Morton&#8217;s classic travel book\u00c2\u00a0In Search of England, an enduring account of Morton&#8217;s ramblings through the English countryside in the early days of the motorcar which was first published in 1927.\u00c2\u00a0Like Morton, we&#8217;ve begun our journey heading West from London.\u00c2\u00a0 This past week has seen us travelling through Berkshire and Wiltshire.
