{"id":88,"date":"2008-05-21T13:38:50","date_gmt":"2008-05-21T20:38:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/?p=88"},"modified":"2008-05-21T14:00:29","modified_gmt":"2008-05-21T21:00:29","slug":"not-in-my-backyard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/05\/21\/not-in-my-backyard\/","title":{"rendered":"NOT IN MY BACKYARD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Town braces itself for arrival of gypsies\u00e2\u20ac\u009d ran the headline in the <a title=\"Wilts Standard\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wiltsglosstandard.co.uk\/display.var.2233778.0.town_braces_itself_for_arrival_of_gypsies.php\" target=\"_blank\">Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard<\/a> last week in reference to the bi-annual <a title=\"Horse Fair\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cotswolds.info\/blogs\/gypsy-horse-fair.shtml#horsefair\" target=\"_blank\">Stow Gypsy Horse Fair<\/a>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Cotswold town of Stow-on-the-Wold has held the fair since 1476, when it was granted a royal charter and it took place this year on <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Thursday 15th May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Thousands of travellers, most of them <a title=\"Roma people\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roma_people\" target=\"_blank\">Romany gypsies<\/a>, descend upon this decidedly conservative town, arriving in the modern caravans and lorries which have largely replaced the brightly painted wagons that visitors would have seen thirty years ago.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The gypsies trade horses and erect tents and stalls selling goods ranging from plastic toys to fake mink coats for children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In recent years local residents have expressed increasing dissatisfaction with the disruption the fair brings.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Political correctness is abandoned as they talk of \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcthieving gypsies\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and wonder at the fact that many of the travellers cannot read or write properly.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>In 2000, a court injunction threatened every trader at the fair with imprisonment if they camped overnight in the field in which it is held. The gypsies got around this simply by buying the field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">At Stow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Tourist Information Centre the polite, well-dressed lady manning the desk informed us that the event wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t welcome but that the authorities were powerless to stop it.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>She talked of businesses deciding to close, rather than face theft or damage to their properties and sure enough, most of the shops, B&amp;Bs and local pubs all had hand-written \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcclosed\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 signs hanging in the window.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_8237.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-89\" title=\"img_8237\" src=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_8237.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"756\" srcset=\"https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_8237.jpg 563w, https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_8237-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">I particularly liked the unnecessarily elaborate notes pinned in some shop windows. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We are now closed due to kitchen refurbishment and re-open Friday 16<sup>th<\/sup> May\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (the day after the festival) and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Crock will be closed on May 13<sup>th<\/sup>, 14<sup>th<\/sup> and 15<sup>th<\/sup> for alterations and improvements\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (no sign of alterations when I passed).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_8244.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-90\" title=\"img_8244\" src=\"http:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_8244.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_8244.jpg 567w, https:\/\/we-english.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/img_8244-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Our camper van provoked an amusing reaction.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Parking up for the night at Stow Rugby Club, we were approached by a member of the club to check that we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d paid.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We assured him everything was in order.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Oh,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said unapologetically, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I thought you were with the fair.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Then, reassured of our \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcrespectability\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153If you go, watch your pockets.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Some of those kids will have your wallet in an instant.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">A few days later, while staying on a small campsite in the <a title=\"Forest of Dean\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fweb.org.uk\/dean\/\" target=\"_blank\">Forest of Dean<\/a>, we heard the unmistakable beat of a large sound system booming out in the middle of the night.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>An all night rave in this \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcheart-shaped land\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 that inspired the term \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcpicturesque\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and all those genteel 18<sup>th<\/sup> and 19<sup>th<\/sup> century tours! (see footnote below).<span>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>Our fellow campers were not impressed.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The owner of the campsite relayed the latest information in disparaging terms every time her telephone rang.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">I cycled off in search of this spectacle, lugging my tripod and camera on my back.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It took me an hour to find it, but it was worth it, greeted as I was by the surreal sight of a transit van spilling out huge speakers, around which were gathered about fifty people all distinctly the worse for wear, head banging and lolling around, but in a beautiful pine clearing in the forest.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I managed a few pictures before the police arrived and stopped the proceedings. (For an online article about raves in the Forest of Dean see this <a title=\"Raves\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thisisgloucestershire.co.uk\/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=231771&amp;command=displayContent&amp;sourceNode=231773&amp;contentPK=19837511&amp;folderPk=108571&amp;pNodeId=231887\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">It&#8217;s clear that most people do not want unofficial, disruptive and noisy events taking place within the vicinity of their homes.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>They worry about damage to property and land.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>But I felt that such events enrich our cultural and social landscape, which can seem increasingly sterile and regimented, and are expressions of diversity of people and place and as such, should be enjoyed (responsibly, of course!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Footnote- <a title=\"Birth of British Tourism\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wyevalleyaonb.org.uk\/pages\/wye_so_special\/birthplace.asp\" target=\"_blank\">The Birthplace of British Tourism<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Wye Valley and Forest of Dean witnessed the birth of British tourism in the eighteenth century. The area became widely known following the publication in 1782 of <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><em>Observations on the River Wye<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> by the Reverend <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Gilpin\"><span>William Gilpin<\/span><\/a>. The first illustrated tour guide to be published in Britain, it helped travellers locate and enjoy the most &#8220;picturesque&#8221; aspects of the countryside.
